Wilkes-Barre City Health Department to Co-Host Child Nutrition Day

The Wilkes-Barre Health Department along with Luzerne County Head Start, and Maternal & Family Health Services are teaming up for a Child Nutrition Day on Tuesday, September 20th, from 11 AM to 3 PM at Luzerne County Head Start, 23 Beekman Street, Wilkes-Barre. The event is free and open to the public. This project was funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Health’s Preventive Health and Health Services Block Grant.

Healthy eating in children is important for proper growth, development and to prevent various health conditions. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020–2025 recommend that people aged 2 years or older follow a healthy eating pattern that includes a variety of fruits and vegetables.

The Wilkes-Barre Health Department will have their mascot Healthy Bear and the Wheel of Health game with prizes at the event and will also provide nutrition educational materials. Additionally, vouchers for the Wilkes-Barre Farmers Market will be provided to attendees (one voucher per family).

The Geisinger Wyoming Valley Trauma Unit will sponsor a Bile Helmet Giveaway.

Area agencies will be on hand to provide information on the healthy living for their children and family-focused programs, including:

  • Luzerne County Head Start
  • Maternal and Family Health Services – WIC Nutrition Program
  • Healthy cooking tips and demonstrations from CEO
  • Dinner 4 Kids
  • Free to B Mom (breast feeding)
