Waste Collection & Recycling
On May 3, 2021, the City of Wilkes-Barre began Dual Stream Recycling. Dual Stream Recycling keeps paper and cardboard products separate from glass and plastic containers and metal cans. Some of the benefits of Dual Stream Recycling are less contamination, higher quality and more valuable recovered material, and lower costs to process the collected recyclables. Paper and cardboard collection and plastic, bottles, and metal can collection will alternate each week on your neighborhood’s collection day.
Please visit the Dual Stream Recycling page for more information.
The City of Wilkes-Barre provides waste collection for residents living in single-family homes, duplexes, or apartment buildings with less than 4 individual apartments. Garbage collection fees are charged via a "pay-per-bag" usage system.

Yard Waste is collected curbside at no additional cost to residents. Each year, yard waste collection begins in late March/early April and ends in late November/early December. The limit of yard waste containers is 5 bins and/or paper leaf bags per household.
Special Collections are conducted as time and budget allows. Past special collections have included curbside white goods (large appliances) disposal and tire recycling. Special collections will be advertised well in advance.
