Wilkes-Barre City Cemetery Restoration Committee to Host Atlas Preservation’s 48 States Tour
Wilkes-Barre City Mayor George C. Brown and the Wilkes-Barre City Cemetery Restoration Committee will be hosting the 48 State Tour, sponsored by Atlas Preservation, on Friday, July 28th from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM at the Wilkes-Barre City Cemetery. The stop will feature Jon Appell, a renowned preservationist who is restoring cemeteries one stone at a time. More information about the 48 State Tour can be found online at: https://48statetour.com/
This event is free and open to the public. Participants are asked to wear closed toe shoes and dress accordingly for the weather, which is forecasted to be mostly sunny and hot. Participants should bring their own chair, water, snacks, bug spray, and sunscreen. A lunch break will take place around noon.
Jon Appell will begin the day with a brief tour and talk about safety, stone identification, and how weather affects the stone. He will give a cleaning demonstration, including guidance on what products to use. After the cleaning demonstration, everyone will be given the opportunity to work in teams on a stone. Cleaning supplies will be provided. Headstone repair work will also be performed by Jon on some stones so participants can witness the procedure.
The 48 States Tour stop at the Wilkes-Barre City Cemetery was made possible by the dedicated members of the Wilkes-Barre City Cemetery Committee. The Wilkes-Barre Cemetery Beautification Fund was created for the beautification, upkeep, and repair of the Wilkes-Barre City Cemetery. This fund is led by the City of Wilkes-Barre, Mayor George C. Brown, and a wide variety of community volunteers, in collaboration with The Luzerne Foundation.
