Wilkes-Barre City Announces Changes to Yard Waste & Leaf Collection; Thanksgiving Holiday Collection Schedule
Wilkes-Barre Mayor George C. Brown announced the end of curbside yard waste pickup for this year. This week, ending November 20th, is the last week for curbside yard waste (grass clippings, garden waste, and wood waste) collection, on residents’ collection day.
Curbside leaf collection via DPW’s leaf vacuum truck will continue over the next few weeks. Leaves will be removed from the tree lawn and curb line (where the street meets the curb). Residents must have leaves that they want removed, collected in small piles, on their tree lawns. Leaf bags will not be accepted.
The tentative schedule for curbside leaf collection is as scheduled:
Week of November 23rd: East End, Parsons, and Miners Mills neighborhoods
Week of November 30th: South Wilkes-Barre 2 neighborhood
Week of December 7th: Downtown and South Wilkes-Barre 1 neighborhoods
Week of December 14th: North End, Heights, and Brookside neighborhoods
Week of December 21st: Mayflower, Rolling Mill Hill, Iron Triangle and Goose Island neighborhoods
City Hall will be closed and there will be no DPW services on Thanksgiving Day, November 26th and the Day after Thanksgiving, November 27th. Thursday, November 26 garbage collection for South Wilkes-Barre 2, and Friday, November 27th garbage collection East End, Parsons, and Miners Mills is rescheduled for Saturday, November 28th. Recycling will resume the following week, with double recycling pickup for South Wilkes-Barre 2 on Thursday, December 3rd and double recycling pickup for East End, Parsons & Miners Mills on Friday, December 4th.
As the number of COVID-19 positive cases continue to rise in the county, state, and nation, daily DPW manpower numbers are likely to fluctuate, causing disruptions to scheduled collections. Citizens are asked to be patient and cognizant of the possibility of such delays, as the City of Wilkes-Barre continues to provide essential services, including waste removal.
