4th of July Announcements

Mayor Tony George reminds residents and visitors of the city’s Old Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration on Wednesday, July 4th at Kirby Park on Market Street.

4th of July Festivities

The fun and festivities will begin at noon, with entertainment from Eddie Day and the Starfires from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. Entertainment is sponsored by: Mericle Commercial Real Estate Services, Price Chopper, and Visit Luzerne County; gold sponsors: Martz Group, and Berkshire Hathaway Guard Insurance Company; and silver sponsors: Colours Inc., Service Electric Cable TV & Communications, and the Westmoreland Club. Mohegan Sun Pocono is proud to present the 2018 Fireworks Display, beginning at dusk. The display is conducted by Skyshooter Displays of Wapwallopen, PA.

Safety

The City reminds residents and visitors that alcoholic beverages, glass containers, smoking, and personal fireworks (including sparklers) are prohibited in Kirby Park. Additionally, with the exception of service dogs, dogs are not permitted in the park during the Fourth of July, per City Ordinance Sec. 5-13(c): "No dog shall be allowed in or on any public park or property within the confines of the City of Wilkes-Barre that is being used as a location for a city-sanctioned event". Kirby Park will close immediately after the conclusion of the fireworks.
The Wilkes-Barre Fire Department will have a staffed ambulance available to assist with medical emergencies, from 3:00 PM to 12:00 AM next to the Martz Pavilion inside Kirby Park. Additionally, a fire engine will be placed in service from 6:00PM to 11:00 PM near the fireworks command post before, to ensure safety during, and after the fireworks display.

Parking

Amusements rides will be located in the Kirby Park parking lot, which will have handicap parking only. Additionally, parking is available at Wilkes University’s lot on Northampton Street, Kingston, next to Ralston Field and at Berkshire Hathaway GUARD Insurance parking lot at Market & River Street. The City thanks both Wilkes and Guard for their providing access to their lots.

Market Street will be closed to vehicle travel on Wednesday, between 7:30 PM and 10:30 PM.

Curbside Collection

In observance of Independence Day, City Hall will be closed on Wednesday, July 4th and DPW services will be postponed. Residents in Mayflower, Rolling Mill Hill, Iron Triangle, & Goose Island neighborhoods with a Wednesday Collection Day will have their garbage and yard waste picked up on Thursday, July 5th and recycling pickup will resume the following week on Wednesday, July 11th. All other collection dates will remain as scheduled.
